Bon Voyage ‘Mustard & Elephant’ Matching Trio!

…patchwork quilt…cushion cover…name bunting…
100_sml…Remember my ‘Mustard & Elephant’ patchwork quilt that came together in all it’s yellow, grey and turquoise glory last year  (-you can read more about it here-), well I’m happy to say that together with it’s matching ‘Mustard & Elephant’ cushion companion (-you can see all about that here-), were right up Molly-from-Kansas’ street. So much so that she requested a length of ‘Crafty Prawn’ personalised name bunting for baby Soren to go with them…
So after being prettily packaged with love and co-ordinating coloured tissue paper, this trio trundled off to Kansas!
blog1-01Here are some pictures of the quilt…
…beautifully bold yellow, grey, navy and turquoise rectangular patchwork of polka dots, gingham and stripes.

One very special pug-on-a-bike cushion…

I’ve been holding out on posting this little beauty for a while now as it was a Christmas present and I didn’t want to spoil the surprise (Merry Christmas by the way)! But I thought that now we’re floating through the in-betweeny limbo week between Christmas and the New Year, I’d take the opportunity to tell you about one very special pug-on-a-bike cushion!
blog2-01This cushion cover was commissioned as a gift for my Californian friend John, by his lovely Mum, earlier in the year. Created as something for John to remember his time in Rotterdam once he’d moved onto pastures new in the US and beyond! As a passionate cyclist and pug owner, this is what we came up with!
blog1-01We’ve got an appliqued blue bike, complete with polka dot tyres with hand-embroidered spokes and mud-guards; a running stitch dirt-trail adorned with personalised hand-embroidered text; and the crowning glory of this very special pug-on-a-bike cushion…the PUG. She’s called Nora by the way and based on a real Nora the pug!
blog3-01This little hand drawn illustration has been translated onto the fabric through delicate hand-embroidery, making this cushion truly one of a kind! She has a little pink tongue, fat rolls and a quizzical expression…very like Nora the real pug!
The background fabric for the cushion cover is beautifully soft oatmeal linen and the back fabric is a gorgeous bike printed mustard linen by the japanese fabric designers Echino. I’ve used a zip opening instead of my usual buttons as I didn’t want to disrupt the beautiful bikes travelling across the reverse!
015_edit_smlAll my cushions come fully lined, with any raw internal edges finished with a tight zigzag stitch and a special ‘The Crafty Prawn’ fabric label for that extra professional finish.
Have a look at my ‘ready-to-ship’ cushions here, or if you’d like to commission your own special one-of-a-kind personalised cushion with an embroidered pet of your choice (!) then just drop me a message at

Folky Birds born again!

In a bid to tick something off my long loooooooong list of products I plan to make for The Crafty Prawn shop one day when I have the time/money; I made these Folky Birds cushions a few weeks ago. My ideal way of making would be to use both my own original printed designs alongside some lovely patterned fabric that I’ve found, collected or bought…and this is my first proper attempt…and I’m pretty pleased with the result.

Folky Birds Cushions_together-01

Featuring my original ‘Folky Birds’ hand-screen printed design, which began life as a design for my final major project at university; these beautifully handmade cushion covers would bring a sunny, fun, folky feel to your living room, liven up an old armchair or be a perfectly cosy addition to a children’s nursery or playroom.
The ‘Folky Birds’ design is one of my original hand-drawn designs inspired by Eastern European folk art, featuring a big mumma-bird and a smaller baby-bird adorned with flower motifs and folky circles. The print was originally part of a repeat pattern for interior panels and a blind, which you can see here. I’ve revived these tangerine orange and maroon printed birdies printed by co-ordinating them with some gorgeous colours and patterns from my stash.

For the orange and red I combined rusty-red-corduroy, red-polka-dot-cotton and a graphic-funky-floral. And for the maroon and navy, a moody-stripey-wool, ditsy-floral-cotton and a plum-candy-stripe are combined to create a one of a kind, modern patchwork cushion. To add that special ‘Crafty Prawn’ attention to detail, I als0 hand-embroidered accents of running stitch which adds a hand-made folky touch to this special cushion.

‘Crafty Prawn’ cushions come fully lined in a co-ordinating colour, have a interfaced button hole panels for durability and are made to a high quality finish, including a fabric Crafty Prawn label. So watch this space, hopefully there’ll be many more!
