Handmade patchwork quilt in rainbow colours, featuring detailed hand embroidery and special little name & birth date square
Dimensions: 50” x 50” (127cm x 127cm)
This beautifully crafted rainbow coloured quilt is a perfect ‘new baby’ present or something for your own family to keep forever as an heirloom. The quilt has been pieced together from hundreds of 3” x 3” squares in a variety of collected, found and re-cycled fabrics, all cotton and cotton mix. Some special ones include William Morris, ‘strawberry thief’, Liberty prints and textured corduroy. Radiating out from the middle of the quilt, the small squares are cleverly arranged to suggest a rainbow of white, blue, green, yellow and red blocks of colour.
A unique feature of this quilt is the detailed hand embroidered panel in the centre. The text is an extract from Beatrix Potter’s ‘Pigling Bland’ story. Stitched entirely by hand, each letter has been embroidered using colour fast stranded cotton in a delicate satin stitch, on 100% white linen. The text is brought alive by the quirky arrangement of the words and the original use of colours, for example blues & greens used for the listing of boy piglet names; and pink & lilac for the girl piglet names.
The quilt also features a special, totally unique, name and birth date square – in the boy piglet colours as for a new baby boy – with running stitch detailing around the square to highlight it.
The quilt has been constructed using Hobbs heirloom quality batting, and machine quilted with corresponding coloured thread on the top – yellow in the yellow block, blue in the blue block etc; and a contrasting pale blue on the back, to contrast with the maroon and navy blue backing fabric. The embroidered area in the centre has been hand quilted to preserved the delicate detailing.
