Dusky Pink, Teal + Muted Tone Quilt for a Bronwin Bub

So despite the lack of quilt related posts, I have actually been lucky enough to be asked to make quite a few ‘Crafty Prawn Custom-Made Quilts’ this year. I’ve neglected blogging about them which results in them just sitting on my computer, hiding away like shrinking violets. So here’s #1…

A dusky pink, teal and muted tonal quilt – in a random patch layout – made especially for a little Bronwin bub.
I love making things for lovely families I know – makes it all the more special!
005_smlOriginally inspired by a cushion featuring William Morris’ Strawberry Thief print in a muted colourway, I put together a stylish, sophisticated but playful palette of vintage, new and collected plains, tones and patterns. There’s even a little bit of William Morris fabric thrown in – well, what would you expect for a quilt destined for a beautiful house in Islington, London!
With personalised custom hand embroidery in the form of the new bub’s full name and birthdate AND a little message from her doting aunties and uncle, this quilt is a total one off!blog-01 In an all over random-patch layout, with a teal polka dot binding and border around the hand-embroidered panels; and a subtle oatmeal pinstripe linen on the reverse.
Thank you Bronwins for asking me to make your newest family member a little quilt.
And here she is snuggled up in it…

Made-to-order Rainbow Patchwork, Hand-Embroidered Quilt…For Baby Nora

A mainly-pictures post featuring my most recent made-to-order ‘Crafty Prawn’ quilt…
blog2-01…made a few months ago – still in the 2013th year, this quilt is a variation on my Rainbow Patchwork Quilt, originally created for my little nephew Finn who was born almost exactly a year before the recipient of this rainbow beauty.

a glimpse of the making…
blog-01…many a cup of tea, scruffy square tallies, and numerous safety pins are just some of my vital tools! Hand-embroidering the special name and birth-date squares is one of my favourite parts of the whole process. Basting with hundreds of safety pins…on the floor (clean+well swept of course)…occasionally pricking myself and kneeling on said safety pins…is not. But it’s all part of the fun of course.

a glimpse of the details…
blog3-01…I’ve used a striped two-tone binding for this one, which actually really adds to the overall appearance of the quilt and ties in all the various colours and patterns. I was doubtful that it would have this effect and was suspicious that it would confuse your eye making the full-on patchwork seem a little chaotic. BUT I’m glad I stuck with my instincts and went with stripey! Simple cross-hatched quilting also adds a beautiful texture.

a glimpse of the hand-embroidery…
blog5-01…’Crafty Prawn Custom-Made’ means hand-embroidery. In this case, a line of Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet’s wise words in maroon, with rainbow touches to highlight special words. Each letter personally hand-embroidered by my little spindly fingers (they are really quite spindly) on soft 100% white linen.
***Not just any old custom-made…it’s ‘Crafty Prawn Custom-Made’!***

and a glimpse of little Nora modelling her quilt (beautifully I may add!)…

“I is a dream-blowing giant,’ the BFG said ‘Nice dreams. Lovely golden dreams.
Dreams that is giving the dreamers a happy time.”

The BFG’, Roald Dahl

We have a little garden, a garden of our own.
And everyday we water there the seeds that we have sown.
We love our little garden, and tend it with such care.
You will not find a faded leaf or blighted blossom there.”

“My dear young fellow,’ the Old-Green-Grasshopper said gently, ‘there are a whole lot of things in this world of ours you haven’t started wondering about yet.”

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.”

‘Jaberwocky’ from
‘Through the Looking-Glass,’ Lewis Carroll

Mole sat on the bank, while the river still chattered on to him, a babbling procession of the best stories in the world, sent from the heart of the earth to be told at last to the insatiable sea”

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
‘O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are!,”

‘The Owl and The Pussycat’, Edward Lear
It seemed a very unusual kind of bear. It was brown in colour, a rather dirty brown, and it was wearing a most odd-looking hat with a wide brim. The bear bent down to do up it’s suitcase and Mrs Brown caught a glimpse of the writing on the label…PLEASE LOOK AFTER THIS BEAR. THANK YOU.”
‘Paddington Bear’, Michael Bond
They called aloud, ‘Our Sieve ain’t big,
But we don’t care a button! we don’t care a fig!
In a Sieve we’ll go to sea!’
Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.”
‘The Jumblies’, Edward Lear
“Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind. “Pooh?” he whispered.
“Yes, Piglet?”
“Nothing,” said Piglet, taking Pooh’s hand. “I just wanted to be sure of you.”

It’s a funny thing about mothers and fathers. Even when their own child is the most disgusting little blister you could ever imagine, they still think that he or she is wonderful.” ‘Matilda’, Roald Dahl

Forget-me-not blue patchwork & embroidered quilt…for baby Bertie

051_edit_smlThis is the story of a custom-made quilt for a baby called Bertie, which I’m calling my ‘Forget-me-not-blue’ quilt. Inspired by the blue/green/white half of my ‘Two-Halves blended quilt’, my lovely customer Emily asked if it would be possible to create a whole quilt with these colours and fabrics. Add a bit of specially selected hand-embroidered text from Winnie-the-pooh (that Pooh is sooo popular), and a signature Crafty Prawn name & birthdate square, and voila! One Forget-me-not-blue patchwork and embroidered quilt for baby Bertie.

illustrator template for etsy listingsI particularly enjoyed working on this one, I love working with complimentary tonal colours and really relish the opportunity to create these scrappy squares! This involved tumbling out all my scrappy bits and pieces from my ‘blue’, ‘green’ and ‘white’ scrappy drawers, and matching up nice combinations of ‘that little bit of spotty green’ with ‘this little bit of moss green linen whatsit’…

013_edit_sml…de-constructed quilt in progress. Hand-embroidered linen with 194 patchwork squares in waiting…
As with all my ‘Crafty Prawn’ quilts, I like to use a mixture of new, collected, found and up-cycled fabrics for my patchworks. I think this gives the quilts a one-off, modern yet quirky feel and a richness in texture and pattern. Just some of the fabrics used in this quilt include…a cute Japanese Kawaii linen with funny phrases like ‘tea please, Etsy sourcedup-cycled floral needle-cord originally in the form of a girls skirt, found in a Cardiff charity shop, years backa William Morris design in a contemporary lilac/blue colourwaysome brand-new geometric blue spot from ‘Tante Ema’, a German fabric designer I just found, ….I could go on! But i guess that’s enough geeky fabric info for now…I guess this is also what makes the quilts I make feel quite personal and it’s always a bit hard to send them off!

forget-me-not-blue1-01-01…I love my wooden embroidery hoop…I bought it in my first week of my textile degree and it’s been with me ever since, perfect for these small delicate letters…
Winnie-the-Pooh strikes again! Becoming a regular occurrence in a ‘Crafty Prawn’ quilt. This once has a multi-tonal ‘heart’ for added interest and just because combining mustard yellow, duck-egg blue and dusky lilac all in one word gives me kicks! Bertie’s name square has been delicately bordered with a mustard yellow running stitch. Don’t think I’ll ever get bored of hand-embroidery, maybe I should have been around in an earlier time, where the accuracy of your hand-stitch was a highly prized skill…

forget-me-not-blue3-01I have quilted this one quite densely, which adds a lovely texture to the over all quilt. Using a dark and light blue, the quilt features two overlapping grids of intersecting lines. An added detail, which is difficult to make out in the pictures above – you’ll just have to see it in the flesh to get the real affect! Oh, and I forgot to mention the traditional, slightly tacky and a lot kitsch, dutch cotton fabric that slipped into a few squares. Adorned with all things dutch – clogs, ships, cows and windmills; used sparingly this delftware blue pattern goes very nicely with my tonal blues and adds to the quirky effect! You can just spot a ship sailing on a wave of patchwork there…

forget-me-not-blue42-01This ‘Forget-me-not-blue’ quilt has been backed with a polka dot baby blue cotton fabric, which finishes off the general feeling of whimsy! The white quilting lines on the reverse create a wonderful repetitive texture, making the quilt almost double sided and reversible.

And so all that’s left to show you is this quilt in action with Bertie chillin’!
