A Punch of Pastel Power

So, I wouldn’t say I’m a fan of pastel colours, I’m more of a brights and vivids sort of girl. BUT pastels are everywhere I look at the moment. It’s safe to say…wait for it, I’m going to come out with some sales speak…they are ‘so on-trend right now, baby!
I figure pastels don’t have to be insipid, so here’s my Punch-of-Pastel-Power! YEAH!
pastel power-01pictures from top…‘pretty pastels’ photo by me // ‘diaphanous 2014 colour trend’ from fashiontrendsetter.com //painting in pastel’ from ohmylittedears.com blog // ‘spring/summer 2014 colour trend’ from fashionising.com //bunting points’ from The Crafty Prawn // ‘setting hues’ from designseeds.com

This is the first (and probably only time) that I’ve found a silver lining to the fact that our scruffy old Rotterdam apartment has an avidly painted salmon-y pink living room. We’re talking the walls, the wooden window frames, the doors, part of the ceiling, the pipes…whoever did it really loved that pink. I, on the other hand, do not. But after disposing of the lurid Kermit green in the bedroom and dark aubergine purple in my small studio space, I just didn’t have the courage to attack the salmon pink. So anyway, here it provides a nice little backdrop for some of my pastel-power inspired photos…
blog1-01…and finally, on that note, here’s a sneaky peak of a selection of fabrics destined for a new Crafty Prawn mini-quilt called ‘Abstract Gems’. Pulled ‘straight from my stash’ – as people in the quilting world love to say – that pretty in-your-face fabric you see is actually a very lovely printed linen I acquired from the kind-lady-who-gave-me-tonnes-of-fabric. We’re going to call it ‘vintage’ as I’m pretty sure it’s straight from the 90’s as it reminds me of Will Smith’s hair in ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ and a little bit of some lurid shellsuits my older sisters used to have (do you know what I mean?!) BUT once I’ve finished with it, it’s going to be mega cool honest. Imagine it in a stripped back, hipster East-London warehouse apartment and you’ll understand my vision! :)
blog2-01AND, notice those perfectly pastel tones? Intended to be a double-sided mini quilt a bit like this ‘Summer in a Square’ baby blanket, the plain fabrics of Dusky-Pink, Sand, Mint, Teal and Aubergine-Purple will make a funky patchwork for one side to compliment those Abstract Gems on the other. Watch this space…

Bon Voyage ‘Mustard & Elephant’ Matching Trio!

…patchwork quilt…cushion cover…name bunting…
100_sml…Remember my ‘Mustard & Elephant’ patchwork quilt that came together in all it’s yellow, grey and turquoise glory last year  (-you can read more about it here-), well I’m happy to say that together with it’s matching ‘Mustard & Elephant’ cushion companion (-you can see all about that here-), were right up Molly-from-Kansas’ street. So much so that she requested a length of ‘Crafty Prawn’ personalised name bunting for baby Soren to go with them…
So after being prettily packaged with love and co-ordinating coloured tissue paper, this trio trundled off to Kansas!

Made-to-order Rainbow Patchwork, Hand-Embroidered Quilt…For Baby Nora

A mainly-pictures post featuring my most recent made-to-order ‘Crafty Prawn’ quilt…
blog2-01…made a few months ago – still in the 2013th year, this quilt is a variation on my Rainbow Patchwork Quilt, originally created for my little nephew Finn who was born almost exactly a year before the recipient of this rainbow beauty.

a glimpse of the making…
blog-01…many a cup of tea, scruffy square tallies, and numerous safety pins are just some of my vital tools! Hand-embroidering the special name and birth-date squares is one of my favourite parts of the whole process. Basting with hundreds of safety pins…on the floor (clean+well swept of course)…occasionally pricking myself and kneeling on said safety pins…is not. But it’s all part of the fun of course.

a glimpse of the details…
blog3-01…I’ve used a striped two-tone binding for this one, which actually really adds to the overall appearance of the quilt and ties in all the various colours and patterns. I was doubtful that it would have this effect and was suspicious that it would confuse your eye making the full-on patchwork seem a little chaotic. BUT I’m glad I stuck with my instincts and went with stripey! Simple cross-hatched quilting also adds a beautiful texture.

a glimpse of the hand-embroidery…
blog5-01…’Crafty Prawn Custom-Made’ means hand-embroidery. In this case, a line of Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet’s wise words in maroon, with rainbow touches to highlight special words. Each letter personally hand-embroidered by my little spindly fingers (they are really quite spindly) on soft 100% white linen.
***Not just any old custom-made…it’s ‘Crafty Prawn Custom-Made’!***

and a glimpse of little Nora modelling her quilt (beautifully I may add!)…

Summer in a Square Mini Quilt READY TO SHIP NOW

…no matter what the season, wrap your little one up in this little bit of summer with my ‘Summer in a Square’ stripey baby quilt.  This would make a beautiful new-baby gift for a little girl – or boy if you’re not anti-flowers!
030_edit_smlillustrator template for etsy listingsthe quilt…
…this ‘Summer in a Square’ mini quilt really packs a sumptuous punch of heady summery colours, guaranteed to cheer you up on those grey winter days!
…measuring approximately 35” x 35” (89cm x 89cm), which is a large baby blanket size.
…can be used for a new baby to snuggle up in a moses basket, as a playmat, for tummy time, or as an everyday nap-time blankie in the stroller, pram or buggy when out and about.
…the striking element of this quilt is the sumptuous summer colours! A whole-cloth quilt of vintage 50’s style florals on one side and striped co-ordinating fabrics on the other; the quilt is completely reversible so can be used which ever way to suit your mood.
illustrator template for etsy listingsillustrator template for etsy listings…made using Hobbs heirloom quality 100% cotton batting, this quilt is lightweight but surprisingly very warm.
…perfect for everyday use, it also rolls up very small and can easily fit in a nappy/diaper bag or handbag.
…this quilt has been edged with handmade double thickness hot pink binding, which contrasts beautifully with the green vintage floral side and co-ordinates with the hot pink stripes on the stripey side.
…all my quilts come with a special ‘The Crafty Prawn’ fabric label attached on the reverse of the quilt – giving that extra professional touch.
046_edit_smlthe special bits…
…I have to say a bit about this beautiful vintage 50’s style fabric – sourced from a vintage shop in Amsterdam – it’s painterly yellow and blue florals bloom all over a green background. Very soft, it is probably a rayon/cotton. The colours in this fabric have inspired the selection of stripes for the reverse.
023_edit_sml…the striped side of the mini quilt has been pieced together from a variety of new and collected fabrics, all cotton or corduroy. Some special ones include…
– a jade-green chunky corduroy giving fabulous texture for little hands to stroke.
– a unique delicate ‘birds on a branch’ fabric, with a slight oriental feel, in pale green.
– forest green 100% cotton with ditsy white dots.
…the entire quilt has been densely machine-quilted with horizontal lines, spaced approx.1cm apart, giving the quilt a beautiful texture.
034_edit_sml062_edit_sml…for the quilting lines, I have used a variety of different coloured and different weight threads for extra interest and attention to detail.
…threads include: decorative topstitch thread, shiny sulky embroidery thread and variegated thread. For example a green topstitch thread contrasts beautifully with the hot pink fabric, while a variegated green and white thread subtley changes colour on a background of yellow fabric.

***This item is totally one of a kind – you will not find another***
